Hitting the road next week for Thanksgiving? So is the CHP.

The CHP from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, will have all available officers out on patrol as part of a maximum enforcement period. CHP Officer Jon Sloat of the Sonoma County CHP office said 80 percent of local officers will be on the roads.

“During the holiday season many people are in a hurry and eager to get to their destination,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said in a statement. “It’s important to remember that safety should never take a back seat; be safe, pay attention to the road, never drink and drive and always buckle up.”

Last year, during a similar CHP’s Thanksgiving driving crackdown, 37 people were killed in crashes statewide — a 12 percent increase from the year before.

The CHP said officers will be focused on those who aren’t wearing their seat belts, who are speeding and who are drunk.

Last year during the Thanksgiving crackdown period, the CHP made 1,461 DUI arrests.

The CHP plans a similar stepped up enforcement during Christmas and New Year’s weekends.
