After last summer’s chip sealing project on Highway 29 in Lake County went bad, Caltrans this week plans to grind a stretch bordering Hidden Valley in an attempt to smooth the rough road.

The work, weather permitting, will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with one-way traffic control in effect. Caltrans anticipates 15-minute delays.

Caltrans said it still plans to repave next summer a 12-mile stretch of Highway 29 from the Lake County line north to Hidden Valley in addition to an 8.5-mile stretch of Highway 175 from Middletown to Cobb. Both stretches were chip sealed last summer, but in a departure from its usual practice, Caltrans used half-inch rock rather than the typical three-eighths-inch rock. That change left the roadways rough and led to hundreds of complaints from Lake County residents.
