Here’s an opportunity for you to suggest places in Santa Rosa for police to target speeders, red-light runners and such.

SRPD is conducting 97 traffic crackdowns over 12 months, starting from last October, and Police Sgt. Rich Celli said while officers already have specific intersections and roads in mind because of accident rates and multiple complaints, he’s open to suggestions from Road Warrior readers. (Leave your suggestions in the comment field below.)

Celli said the operations, funded by the state Office of Traffic Safety, boost public safety because statistics show the number of collisions decrease as enforcement of traffic laws is increased.

This month, Celli said, SRPD plans several operations:

–On Tuesday, six officers will spend four hours each at intersections, particularly looking for drivers who run red lights, don’t yield and cause intersection gridlock.

–On Jan. 25, six officers, again spending four hours each, will target speeders in high-complaint areas and school zones.

–On Jan 27, six officers will spend four hours each targeting drivers who run red lights. Last October, Celli said, a red-light operation involving five officers yielded 28 citations for violations that included red lights, cell phones and suspended licenses.

–In addition, on three days this month SRPD will conduct DUI saturation patrols, where extra officers look for suspects throughout the city. Police aren’t saying which three days they’re picking.

So if you speed, run red lights and drive after you’ve had too much to drink, you’re the kind of driver that Celli and other officers would like to meet.
