You’ve got questions? We’ll try to answer them. Here’s one from a reader:

Question: On Saturday night around 7, I was driving home on southbound Highway 101 through the Rohnert Park construction zone and I counted 7 different CHP officers on traffic stops in a row and I was wondering if you knew what was going on? Did they do some sort of cell phone crackdown or something that wasn’t in your blog? It was pretty crazy to see all those cars pulled over in a row!

Also, since I’m asking, I was wondering what is the difference between the CHP officers who are wearing the tan uniforms, the dark blue uniforms and the light blue uniform shirts? Are they different ranks or something?

Thank you for answering my questions!

Answer: CHP Officer Jon Sloat says the officers most likely were part of a special enforcement effort targeting speeders in the construction zone. He says Caltrans has been urging the CHP to do a crackdown. As part of such a special enforcement, Sloat says one officer typically tracks the speed of drivers with a Lidar laser gun and radios to other officers to stop violators.

As for the uniforms, he says, “When we have severe weather, have special assignments or just have to perform some duty where, frankly, we might get dirty, we are authorized to wear the blue uniforms. They are easier to deal with than the tan wool uniforms. Commercial officers and K-9 officers generally wear blues all the time; the rest on special occasions. The light blue uniform is for Explorers. They occasionally ride along with officers.”
