A Road Warrior reader suggested that we list the hideouts of the CHP along local highways. After all, we’ve all seen some favorite spots for officers to park along Highway 101 — right in front of redwoods in south Santa Rosa, behind K-rails in the Rohnert Park construction zone and elsewhere.

So we asked CHP Officer Jon Sloat, the local spokesman, about the hideouts.

He said the officers aren’t hiding, emphasizing that “our policy is not to conceal ourselves.”

He said drivers should be able to spot an officer alongside the road long before they pass by. But he said the average driver is only looking 100 to 150 down the road and doesn’t see the officer waiting for speeders or other traffic violators farther down.

Which, I guess, is the idea.
