Police across Sonoma County are stepping up their enforcement on drunken drivers this Memorial Day weekend.

Tonight, the CHP will hold a DUI checkpoint, but the time and location of it hasn’t been disclosed.

Another DUI checkpoint will be held Saturday night by the Avoid the 13 Sonoma County DUI Task Force, which is a joint effort by all police agencies in the county. Again, the location is not being revealed by police.

In addition, officers from the county’s various departments will be participating in special patrols looking for DUI drivers across the county throughout the holiday weekend.

Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano said in a statement that during a similar stepped up enforcement last Memorial Day weekend, 58 drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI and five alcohol-related crashes injured seven people. During Memorial Day weekend in 2009, officers arrested 81 DUI drivers and responded to two alcohol-related crashes, which injured two people.

“Sobriety checkpoints are a proven deterrent along with the ‘high visibility’ enforcement campaigns to change behavior, such as drunk driving, driving unrestrained and driving distracted,” Chris Murphy, director of the state Office of Traffic Safety, said in a statement.

OTS is providing funding for this weekend’s DUI crackdown through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DUI checkpoints have proven to be controversial in Sonoma County. A Santa Rosa assemblyman is pushing legislation that regulate how police operate the checkpoints. To read a story on that bill, CLICK HERE.
