A DUI/license checkpoint will be held Friday night and another Saturday night in Sonoma County as part of the countywide Avoid the 13 task force’s end-of-summer DUI crackdown.

While authorities haven’t said where the checkpoints will be, it’s a good bet that one of them will be in Petaluma because police there typically have one during these crackdowns.

The task force holds four, two-week crackdowns a year and points to the lack of any fatal DUI crashes since 2008 as evidence of the success of its campaign. Last year during the same end-of-summer crackdown, 155 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The crackdown will last through Labor Day, Sept. 5, and at times will include roving patrols, checks on drivers on DUI probation and parole and extra attention on habitual DUI offenders.

Petaluma police serves as the lead agency for the Avoid the 13, which also includes the CHP, Sheriff’s Office, police from Cloverdale, Cotati, Healdsburg, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Sonoma, Windsor, Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College, the county Probation Department, State Parks and the state Alcohol and Beverage Control agency.

The task force is funded through federal funds via the state Office of Traffic Safety.
