Extra officers will be on the roads this Halloween weekend looking for DUI suspects as part of a Sonoma County-wide crackdown.

Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano, who coordinates the county’s anti-DUI Avoid the 13 task force, said all police agencies will beef up patrols with officers assigned to specifically look for DUI suspects.

The stepped-up enforcement begins Friday night and goes through Halloween night on Monday. No checkpoints are planned.

“There isn’t a Halloween costume clever enough to hide an impaired driver who’s made the poor decision to get behind the wheel,” Petaluma Police Chief Dan Fish said in a statement. “Whether you’ve had one too many or way too many it is just not worth the risk. Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving.”

Halloween night is one of the deadliest times of the year for drunken drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 48 percent of highway deaths nationwide last Halloween night involved a drunken driver or drunken motorcyclist.

Funding for the extra DUI patrols comes from a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety via the highway safety administration.
