A pet peeve of many Road Warrior readers is speeding in the Highway 101 construction zone from Rohnert Park to Petaluma. CHP officers are on it.

Lately in the evening, one or two officers have been standing along the shoulder of southbound 101 — behind K-rails — checking drivers’ speeds with their LIDARĀ  guns. Last night, one officer was just south of Commerce Boulevard while another was on the Petaluma side of the Cotati Grade, both shooting LIDAR. You couldn’t see them until it was way too late.

CHP Officer Jon Sloat, the spokesman for the local office, said the speed checks are not part of any special operation but more just a part of the officers’ regular duties with a particular attention to the construction zone.

“We want to keep people at 55,” he said.

The construction zone runs from about Santa Rosa Avenue south to the Petaluma Auto Mall, and Sloat said the 55 limit there is enforced day and night whether there’s construction work or not.

Besides speeders, Sloat said, officers are arresting more DUI suspects in the construction zone than usual, particularly at night.
