A crackdown Friday on unsafe speed in Petaluma resulted in 45 tickets being handed out by police.

Five officers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. watched for violators on Old Redwood Highway, Petaluma Boulevard near Highway 101, East Washington Street near Sutter Street, Lakeville Highway at Marina Drive and Lakeville at the South McDowell extension.

Fifty-one drivers were stopped, and 26 were ticketed for unsafe speed, including a motorcyclist without a motorcycle license going 66 mph in a 45-mph zone on Lakeville. Police Sgt. Ken Savano said that was the highest speed of anyone cited.

Other citations included cellphone use, tossing a lighted cigarette out, driving on a suspended license, driving without a license, expired registration, possession of marijuana in a vehicle, possession of alcohol by a minor in a vehicle, failure to obey a traffic control sign and running a red light.
