I had to stop and look twice. Yep, gas for less than $4 a gallon in Santa Rosa.

The Union 76 station at Mark West Springs Road and Old Redwood Highway in Larkfield, just north of Santa Rosa, is selling regular for $3.98 for cash, as of Saturday afternoon.

That compares to, according to gasbuddy.com, $4.15 a gallon at Costco and various Arco stations in Santa Rosa, which typically have the lowest prices.

The average price Saturday for Santa Rosa was $4.30, according to AAA. Statewide, the average was $4.337.

Just north of the Union 76 on Old Red are a Valero and Chevron, both selling gas for cash at $4.09.

Asked why the Union station’s price was so low, the cashier there shrugged his shoulders and said, “I don’t know. The owner wants to sell gas for less.”

Well, let’s hope the owner keeps feeling that way.
